Flowers in the hospital

Isolated Flower I was in the hospital again today, and thought I would take the opportunity  to shoot their flowers. I have picked two which I think has a certain quality to them. The one on the left is very simple nice in that respect. Unfortunately the flower is in the shade, and that dims it down a bit. I like the simplicity of the image though. Hospital Flowers

The second image I chose today, was an attempt to isolate the two flowers from the rest. The flowers are in the sun light this time, which gives them a bit more glow than the one in the shade. The second thing is that they are really sharp especially the right one.

I did a few tests yesterday and realised my 50 mm lens is much sharper if I stop it down to 2.8, and the images kind of pop when I do that. And in this case there was plenty of light to do that.

The second thing I found out is that the lens has a bit of front focus, which I just realised now I handled completely wrong when I took the photo. To compensate I should focus slightly behind the subject instead of slightly in front. Which also explains the slight out of focus of the left photo.

The left one is todays photo, but the right one is so nice I had to show it to you as well.

Looking at the sky

Sky The weather had been changing all day, with some rain, sleet and hail in between. So I decided not to leave the house for too long to find a good subject. But there were times with blue sky, and I found this moment with a cloud formation I liked a lot. So this will do for todays photo.

Details from a hospital

Detail of an hospital I have been in the hospital for a few days with Rasmus. Nothing too serious, but that coupled with my work completely took most of my energy, so I haven’t been as active as I should be. Here is a photo I took in the hospital of a small detail I thought would do good on a photo.

The composition is not quite how I wanted it to be, but I couldn’t find a better angle and a better crop.

Winter scene and decay

Winter scene from Kolding Today’s post is a bit of a mix, I didn’t get around to uploading yesterday’s photo, so I will do that today. It is what you see on the left. yesterday all the trees were covered in a thin layer of snow which gave them this awesome look. So when I went shopping I stopped by Slotssøen in Kolding to make a few shots. It wasn’t what I had in my mind when I drove to Kolding, but the result is decent.

Decay Todays photo is something a bit different. I drove a bit around in the area today with Oskar, and found this run down farm.  I just had to stop and take a few photos of it. It looked as if they had a funeral there today, so I didn’t want to invade their privacy though. I tried tweaking the photo in post processing. First I thought I would give it an antique black and white look, almost sepia, but that was too easy. So instead I went with this slightly desaturated look with lots of contrast to pull out the deterioration of the door.

So a few completely different shots, with the same lens.

Home baking

Baking I needed to get my mind of my PhD project, so I went for a bit of baking and while at it, I might practice my photography skills as well. I went for sausage bread and buns since I could use the same dough, and Rasmus wanted buns. They are really yummy and I can really recommend them.

The photo is taken at a high aperture and close by, using my 50mm lens. The only source of light is the daylight coming from the window, which posed a bit of challenge to get the angle right. The contrast and white balance needed a fair bit of tweaking in the post processing, but it really helped  to convey the bread as being good, at least compared to the photo I pulled out of the camera. But that’s the blessing of shooting in raw.

Here is the recipe. Ingredients:

500g flour
75 butter/margarine
50g yeast
1 egg
2,5 dl milk
(1 table spoon salt and 1 tea spoon sugar)

1. Melt the butter in a casserole. Once the butter is melted add the milk and warm it to around 30 degrees celsius.
2. Dissolve the yeast in the milk
3. Put in the rest of the ingredients, I forgot sugar and salt, but I didn’t miss it.
4. Split the dough in 3 balls and let them rest for a few minutes
5.  If making sausage rolls, roll each dough ball into a circle and cut it into eight slices. If making buns cut the dough balls into pieces and roll them into buns. The recipe suggests 8, but I would like them bigger, so try with 6.
6. For the sausage rolls, place half a sausage on the wide end of the slice, add some ketchup and roll it to a roll like on the photo.
7.  Let it rest for 20 minutes
8. Brush them with eggs/milks/water/coffee, as you feel like and bake them for 10 minutes at 200 degrees.

Muuuh!

Cows in the snow Not Quite the Chris Marquardt moment (worth a listen), but still a nice day. I went out to look at the surrounding area in another errand found these cows. They looked all cuddly so I decided to make them the image of the day.

I like the contrast between  the bright snow and the dark background. I cropped the shot a bit but that’s about it in post processing. I got a shot where the pose (if you can say a cow poses) is better, unfortunately I cropped the cow in a bad way, so this was my best attempt for today. See you tomorrow.

Skærbækværket

Skærbækværket I brought my camera with me to work this morning, in case something would pop up.  And I found this motive. It isn’t quite there yet, but it has something to it. What I really wanted was to have my zoom lens and focus on the smoke stack.  But this is what I will manage today, maybe I will prepare better for tomorrow, in case it is nice weather again.

Sunset over Kolding Fjord

Sunset over Kolding Fjord Here is a photo from yesterday, which I never got around to upload so you get it now.  The sun was acting nice yesterday, and I waited until it was about to go down before I went to take a shot over Kolind Fjord. It is a location I have used several times before, and you might recognise the boat in the lower left corner of the image.

I used my 50mm lens, which I might have changed if I had to redo it, but it kind of works. I underexposed the image by two stops to get the nice rays from the sun to show up and dim down the foreground so the focus would be on the reflections.  The rule of thirds are in play here, but there are three dominant horisontal lines in the image, so….

Once you get the hang of sunsets they are pretty easy to make nice looking, a bit like kids :) That’s it for yesterday, time to see what I can find today.

Sunrise in Skærbæk

Sunrise in Skærbæk Sunrise is just about the same time as I leave the house to go to work, so that gives some opportunities to get some good light when the sky is clear. Today I got a view of Lillebælt and a bit of the marina in Skærbæk. I wanted to create these silhouettes in foreground so I underexposed one stop and nothing else.

Calendar says Spring

Eranthis It is March 1st today, and means Spring, so when I saw the first little Eranthis in the garden today, it was obvious what I had to shoot today.

I have shot it with a low depth of field in the hope to isolate the flower. I would have really liked live view today since it is completely impossible to see where I am focusing unless I lie down, and I didn’t want to, since the garden is all muddy. As you can see the in focus part is really narrow, so I had to take lots of shots to get one that looks good.

Have a nice sunny day
